French club Olympique de Marseille officially announced on Tuesday morning the signing of Moroccan international defender Nayef Aguerd from English club West Ham. The duration and financial details of the contract have not been disclosed.
In a statement on its official website, the French club expressed, “Olympique de Marseille is pleased to announce the signing of Moroccan international center-back Nayef Aguerd from West Ham,” highlighting the player’s distinguished football journey since graduating from the Mohammed VI Academy. He progressed through the ranks of Fath Union Sport before entering professional football with Dijon in 2018, followed by a stint at Rennes in 2020, where he experienced European competitions in the Europa League, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in Ligue 1.
At 29 years old, Aguerd joined the English league in 2022, competing with West Ham, where he won the UEFA Europa Conference League. Last season, he was loaned to Spanish club Real Sociedad, making 36 appearances for the Basque team.
Aguerd, originally from Kenitra, has represented the Moroccan national team in 55 matches and played an exceptional role during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where Morocco reached the semi-finals for the first time in African and Arab football history.
According to French transfer market site Foot Mercato, Aguerd’s transfer to Marseille is valued at approximately €23 million, with his contract extending with the southern club until 2030.
