A fire erupted in a forest in the Daradara area of Chefchaouen on Tuesday, August 12. The National Agency for Water and Forests reported that intervention teams successfully contained the fire on Thursday, August 14.
According to the agency’s regional director, Youssef Zarouqi, firefighting operations will continue in the coming days to achieve full extinguishment of the blaze.
Zarouqi stated that all relevant stakeholders, including regional and local authorities in Chefchaouen and the Royal Armed Forces, were mobilized from the first moments of the fire. The Royal Gendarmerie, Civil Protection, Water and Forests, and auxiliary forces also coordinated field interventions to control and surround the fire.
The official noted the exceptional climatic conditions, which featured low humidity, high temperatures, and winds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour, along with dense vegetation that complicated the containment efforts.
He added that priority in intervention operations was given to protecting lives, property, and forest resources, employing aerial support from “Canadair” aircraft of the Royal Air Force and “Turbo-Track” planes from the Royal Gendarmerie.
The National Agency for Water and Forests urged all citizens, residents, and visitors to Chefchaouen to exercise caution to prevent fire outbreaks, which pose significant risks during this time of year due to rising temperatures and increased visitor activity.
