Residents, particularly members of the expatriate community, expressed their anger over the situation they faced in the Akchour area during the visit of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Infantino visited the city of Chefchaouen and its surrounding areas at the end of July before being received by King Mohammed VI on July 30 in Mdiq, coinciding with the Throne Day celebrations.
The day before the royal reception, visitors to Akchour reported a difficult day on July 29, as roads leading to the mountainous tourist area were closed. This prompted some visitors to ascend the mountains via unsuitable paths, exposing them to significant dangers.
Some affected individuals shared their experiences of being compelled to climb the mountains under the pretext of a certain official’s presence in the area, only to be informed that the restrictions were due to “the presence of the FIFA President.”
Visitors condemned this treatment, calling for an end to such practices in Morocco or, at the very least, for clear and advance communication to residents about ongoing situations to prevent the distress detrimental to the tourism sector.
