The new version of the “Optimist World Championship 2026” was inaugurated today in the city of Tangier, with an official opening ceremony held at Tanja Marina Bay, amidst an international festive atmosphere.
The city witnessed a large cultural carnival in which dozens of countries participated, as the participants paraded along the city’s corniche towards the Powder Tower, wearing their traditional and unique outfits that captured attention, especially the strong participation from Latin American countries.
This championship is considered the most prominent maritime sports event globally for the youth category, marking the first time that Morocco and Africa host this global competition, under the supervision of the Royal Yacht Club de Tanger and the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA).
The events of the championship will continue from June 18 to 28, 2026, with the participation of about 300 male and female athletes representing over 70 countries.
The Official Opening Ceremony at Tanja Marina
The official ceremony at Tanja Marina commenced in the presence of local and international officials, along with representatives from the participating delegations. The ceremony featured the raising of flags of the participating countries, as well as artistic and celebratory performances reflecting the cultural diversity of the participants. Organizers confirmed that preparations were made at the highest level to ensure the success of the championship, reflecting international confidence in the Kingdom’s capabilities to host major global events.
International Carnival on the Corniche of Tangier
Following the official ceremony, a dazzling celebratory carnival took place along the Tangier corniche towards the Powder Tower, where participants from various countries marched in a festive parade, wearing their traditional and unique carnival outfits. The delegations excelled in showcasing their countries’ heritage through colorful and embroidered clothing and traditional dances, creating an atmosphere of joy and cultural openness.
Particularly noteworthy was the participation of Latin American countries, as the delegations presented vibrant carnival outfits inspired by their traditions, featuring bright colors, feathers, and sequins. The performances included traditional dances, among which were Portuguese traditional performances, adding a distinctive international character to the event.
