Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita stated that the current composition of the Security Council is the most challenging, particularly as it includes Algeria, a party in the Western Sahara conflict, and a limited number of Morocco’s allies. Nonetheless, a decision supporting autonomy was passed with 11 votes in favor and 3 abstentions.
The abstention of Pakistan, along with Russia and China, sparked controversy in Morocco, being perceived as an anti-Rabat stance. However, Minister Bourita clarified during an interview on Channel 2 that this position is related to territorial disputes.
Bourita indicated that Pakistan’s abstention is due to the “Kashmir” crisis, a territory contested by China, India, and Pakistan.
This issue shares similarities with the Western Sahara situation, as Pakistan supports a referendum for Kashmir’s self-determination, while India insists on sovereignty over part of the region.
