On Saturday, Mr. Idriss Lachgar was re-elected with an absolute majority as the First Secretary of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces for a fourth term (four years) during the proceedings of the party’s twelfth national conference, held at the Moulay Rachid complex for youth and childhood in Bouznika.
Lachgar’s election followed the national conference’s approval of a recommendation to amend regulations facilitating his fourth term. This extension also applies to all party structures.
According to the party, this decision responds to a broad demand expressed by the organizational bases and regional and sectoral bodies, in recognition of the exceptional trajectory of the First Secretary at the party’s helm, and aims to strengthen the ranks of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces in light of upcoming political challenges.
The conference commenced on Friday under the slogan “A Rising Morocco: Economically… Socially… Institutionally.”
In his opening speech, attended by numerous guests representing political and trade organizations and civil society, as well as international socialist organizations, Idriss Lachgar emphasized that the party has maintained its strong presence amid a backdrop of decline for progressive movements and the fading of various socialist experiments worldwide.
