Decline in Water Reservoir Levels in Morocco: Minister Beraka Blames Evaporation

On Tuesday, October 14, Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka announced that the current fill rate of dams in Morocco stands at 32 percent, down from 40 percent in May.

The minister attributed the decrease in dam storage to the volume of water supplies allocated for agriculture and drinking water, along with the evaporation of 650 million cubic meters of water due to extreme heatwaves.

Baraka also noted that the last agricultural season showed relative improvement compared to previous years, with the national average of rainfall reaching 142 mm. A total of 4.8 billion cubic meters of water resources was recorded, marking a 50 percent increase compared to the previous season.

However, this figure remains 22 percent below the normal national average, with a deficit estimated at 58 percent compared to the average water inflows.

Regarding the decline in the fill rate of dams, Baraka stated that the government has accelerated the pace of projects to enhance water resources, primarily focusing on the construction of major dams. He indicated that 14 large dams are currently under construction, with an additional 11 dams scheduled between 2025 and 2027.
