Hundreds of citizens and civil society representatives gathered in Agadir on Sunday evening for a protest in front of the Hassan II Regional Hospital, often referred to as the “hospital of death,” to denounce what they described as the “catastrophic” state of healthcare services at the facility.
This demonstration follows the recent deaths of six young women who underwent cesarean sections under controversial circumstances. Additionally, videos depicting the hospital’s deteriorating conditions have circulated, highlighting the chronic challenges facing the public healthcare sector in Morocco.
The protesters chanted various slogans, with a prominent demand for improved health conditions. They expressed that they do not want the “World Cup” but rather health services, voicing their frustration over the shortage of medical staff and equipment, particularly in maternity and emergency departments. They pointed out that the hospital, which serves patients from multiple regions, suffers from severe overcrowding and a critical lack of medical and nursing personnel, alongside frequent malfunctions of diagnostic equipment.
