NASA has announced a potential discovery indicating the possibility of ancient life on Mars, made through its Perseverance spacecraft, which has been exploring the planet’s surface since 2021.
The rover has revealed rocks in a dry riverbed that bear signs suggesting the presence of microscopic organisms not visible to the naked eye.
In this context, Nikki Fox, head of NASA’s science mission, described this finding as “the closest we have come to actually finding ancient life on Mars.” However, scientists emphasize the need for in-depth analyses of the samples collected by Perseverance in advanced laboratories on Earth before drawing any definitive conclusions.
The rover is equipped with a drill for penetrating rocks and tubes for storing samples from areas believed to have been habitable billions of years ago, but it is not capable of directly detecting life, either past or present.
