Marrakech, Morocco — Master musician Mustapha Baqbu passed away today, Monday, at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness, according to his relatives as reported by the Moroccan News Agency.

Mustapha Baqbu, born in Marrakech, was a pioneer of Gnawa music in Morocco. He began his artistic journey with local musical groups, starting with the “Najoum Al Hamra” ensemble before joining the “Jil Jilala” group in the 1980s.
Belonging to a family deeply rooted in Gnawa tradition, the late Baqbu significantly enriched the Moroccan popular music scene by blending authentic Gnawa music with global musical styles, earning him fame that extended beyond the nation’s borders.
He was also a prominent figure at the Gnawa and World Music Festival in Essaouira, participating in various editions of the event. Additionally, he took part in numerous music festivals and events both within Morocco and internationally.
