Morocco Strengthens Lead in World Cup Qualifiers
The Moroccan national team has solidified its lead in Group E of the African qualifiers for the World Cup, amassing 21 points after defeating Zambia 2-0 on Monday, September 8.
Morocco had previously secured its qualification for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico last Friday following a victory over Niger. The goals in the match were scored by Youssef En-Nesyri and Hamza Iguane.
Moroccan national football team coach Walid Regragui stated in a press conference that the match against Zambia would provide an opportunity for other players to showcase their talents. He noted, “We will not play with the same players who faced Niger on Friday, but the goal for this match is to win.” He emphasized the team’s desire to perform well despite some fatigue, adding that all details must be managed intelligently.
Regragui remarked, “A good strategy for the national team is not to reveal all our cards,” especially since Zambia will also compete in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. He expressed how this match presents a chance for participating players to demonstrate their skills.
He acknowledged the strength of the Zambian team, which needs to win to assert its place in Africa, noting that player rotation would impact the team positively. “However, changes are good so they cannot access everything related to our national team,” he added.
Regragui highlighted that the primary focus is on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and maintaining this positive momentum. The upcoming Africa Cup of Nations is significant, and the Zambia match will serve as a valuable test for the players.
According to the national coach, the final roster for the next Africa Cup of Nations is crucial, as all players aspire to secure a spot in the competition. He stated, “We understand this responsibility, and there is no room for errors in selecting players.”
Morocco will participate in the 2026 World Cup for the seventh time and the third consecutive time, following editions in 1970, 1986, 1994, 1998, 2018, and 2022.
