The Grand Stadium of Tangier is currently undergoing renovation in preparation for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the World Cup 2030. It is expected to be officially ready by the end of September, according to architect Anwar Al-Omrawi, who is overseeing the project.
In a statement to the Moroccan News Agency, Al-Omrawi noted that all internal spaces have been revamped to meet FIFA standards in anticipation of the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The cost of these renovations is estimated at 360 million USD.
He added that the Grand Stadium of Tangier is the second-largest structure of its kind in the world, following the Maracanã Stadium in Brazil. The stadium features a mixed structure, with half made of metal and the other half composed of cables. The work is being carried out by Moroccan companies with technical support from Germany.
Al-Omrawi stated, “In May 2024, we were still in the study phase; however, the stadium has now taken shape and the work is nearing completion.”
The capacity of the renovated stadium will be 75,000 seats, and it has been transformed into a facility exclusively for football, following the complete removal of the athletics track. This redesign helps bring spectators closer to the playing field and enhances the atmosphere inside the stadium.
The dimensions of the pitch remain 105 by 68 meters, with natural grass compliant with FIFA standards. A new massive roof is currently being installed, covering all the stands, making it one of the most advanced stadiums in Africa.
