Marine Creature Sparks Alarm on Tangier Beaches

Since the end of July 2025, the beaches of Tangier, particularly the Marghala area, have experienced a concerning phenomenon marked by a significant increase in jellyfish, causing painful stings for numerous beachgoers.

This issue has raised widespread alarm among visitors, overshadowing the summer season as thousands flock annually to enjoy the beauty of Tangier’s coasts. Many beachgoers have reported through social media platforms and local reports injuries ranging from mild to severe.

Jellyfish are gelatinous marine creatures that thrive in warm waters during summer, known for their painful stings caused by specialized cells (nematocysts) located in their tentacles. In the Marghala area, popular with both local and foreign tourists, there has been a noted surge in jellyfish numbers, inciting panic among swimmers.

According to local reports, this increase may be linked to rising water temperatures, which create favorable conditions for jellyfish reproduction, alongside environmental changes resulting from human activities that disrupt the ecological balance in the Mediterranean Sea.

The severity of jellyfish stings varies, often resulting in skin rashes accompanied by intense itching and burning pain. In rare instances, they can lead to severe complications, particularly if the affected person is allergic or if sensitive areas, such as the eyes, are stung.

Beachgoers in Marghala noted that the stings have ruined the enjoyment of swimming, prompting some to leave the beach or delay their visits. This situation has raised questions about the preparedness of local authorities to address this phenomenon, especially given the lack of regular clean-up campaigns for these creatures, unlike in some neighboring countries such as Spain.

For treatment, those stung by jellyfish are advised to follow first aid steps immediately. This includes rinsing the affected area with seawater to remove tentacle remnants and using vinegar to deactivate the stinging cells, while avoiding fresh water that could worsen the condition. Applying warm or cold compresses as pain relief and using creams containing hydrocortisone or antihistamines to alleviate itching and inflammation is also recommended.

In severe cases, seeking immediate medical attention is advised, especially if symptoms such as difficulty breathing or changes in consciousness arise.

Despite the challenges posed by this phenomenon, there are potential positive aspects. Previous reports indicated that some countries, like China, have economically benefited from jellyfish through exports, using them in food and medical industries. In Morocco, these creatures could present an opportunity to develop sustainable fishing activities, potentially transforming a challenge into a source of income for local fishermen.
